Historic Preservation
John holds a Master of Arts from Boston University’s American and New England Studies Department and a Master of Urban Affairs from Boston University. He has a long time interest in historic properties and how they contribute toward the vitality of neighborhoods and communities. This was articulated in Worcester, Newton, and Gloucester by leading major historic preservation efforts in those cities. They are also a means to understand the past and plan for the future. He served on the Boston Landmarks Commission for 7 years and the South End Landmark District Commission for 4 years. He was the principal organizer and designer for the Brighton-Allston Heritage Museum, that opened in 2007, and its two initial exhibitions: Brighton Transformed, a permanent exhibition, and Bull Market, a temporary exhibition. As the first Museum Director at the Waterworks Museum in Chestnut Hill, he managed the initial stages leading up to the opening of this new museum, located in a City of Boston Landmark. He also curated the the art exhibition, Rejuvenation, for Unbound Visual Arts. The exhibition delved into the life cycle of six of Allston-Brighton’s historic landmarks through contemporary art.
